Sugar Rush

A few nights ago some friends and I met up at the Sugar Factory American Brasserie. Located in the meatpacking district, the Sugar Factory is a sweet tooth junkies oasis. It's a candy shop, bar and restaurant all in one. With 6 locations across the United States, one overseas in Bahrain and 3 more opening up this fall in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Barclay Center (NY), it's safe to say the Sugar Factory is definitely a hit. This is evident from the celebrity photo gallery on their website which shows tons of celebrities posing with a variety of their sweet treats, whimsical drinks and more.

The Sugar Factory is definitely an experience.  However, should you decide to check it out I suggest you make a reservation (2-3 weeks in advance). Seriously........ If you only want drinks then a reservation is not needed, but if you plan on eating you'll most certainly need one especially on Saturday evenings. Otherwise, you'll be waiting at least 2 hrs like we did.

The ambiance

The head security guy tried to make the wait as painless as possible by providing us with a plate of hershey kisses and gummy cherries, but that wasn't working. We needed food. Once we finally got seated we were able to enjoy the moment. First order of business was to choose a drink. This was a little difficult being that there were so many deliciously looking ones to pick from. I settled on a Cotton Candy Cosmopolitan, my girl Berry picked the Frozen Hot Chocolate, Tel had the Root beer float made with spirits instead of ice cream, Keisha had the Mai Tai goblet, Latanya the Lollipop Passion goblet, and Nya the White Gummy goblet.

My cosmo was delightful, sexy, delicious and sweet, but not too sweet. My palette was excited as I melted the cotton candy on the rim of my glass while I took a sip. The cotton candy added just enough extra goodness. I didn't get a chance to taste Tel's root beer float, but she did say it was really good. In her words, "the liquor was not over powering which kept the essence of the float, but it was just enough to where I could still taste it". I did however, taste the three goblets Keisha, Nya and Latanya ordered. My favorite was Latanya's Lollipop Passion. It was extremely tasty. In my opinion, the White Gummy was a little too sweet and the Mai Tai didn't do much for me. The goblets come in a 60 oz. fish bowl, and includes some type gummy or hard candy and gives off a smoldering effect due to the liquid nitrogen.  It was quiet a sight.

Ladies night

Tasty goodness

For my meal, I ordered the Sugar Factory's signature burger with a side onion rings. ($2 extra to substitute the fries for onions rings ), I thoroughly enjoyed it.  I was in need of a good burger and the Signature was just that. It was cooked to perfection with lettuce, tomato, crispy onions, minced pickles, ketchup, mayo and your choice of cheese on a brioche bun. The onion rings were crispy, crunchy, big, not greasy and delicious.

The birthday girl Keisha ordered the same burger except with fries and fried macaroni & cheese pops (they came on a stick). I tried the pops and didn't necessarily love them. They were tough to cut and needed some seasoning. On the flip side, the creamy tomato sauce that accompanied the pops was very tasty.  Nya had chicken tenders. Berry ordered the grilled mini Angus beef sliders, Tel had the all natural turkey burger and Latanya ordered the bleu cheese bacon burger. We all enjoyed our meals.   After eating, the staff brought out a slice of red velvet cake with a sparkler in it and sung happy birthday to Keisha.

Sweet Treats

Fooling around

The atmosphere at the Sugar Factory is very lively and up beat. From the time we entered the restaurant the bar stayed packed and tables remained full. My overall rating of the Sugar Factory would be a 8 out of a 10. It would have been higher if we didn't have to wait so long for a seat.

The candy bar and the damaged it caused.

Tips / Need to Know:

  • Make reservations 2 to 3 weeks in advance if you plan on having dinner there, especially on a Saturday.
  • This is not the best place to go on a first date. If you're trying to get to know the person you're with you won't be able to hear a word they're saying. It can get VERY loud. Hey, maybe that's a good thing for some. Heehehheeh
  • Enjoy the experience.
