The Icon and I

Me and Mr. Mizrahi

He's talented, charming, humorous, exciting, vocal, witty and outspoken.  He is Isaac Mizrahi.  American fashion icon, artist, creator, actor and TV host just to name a few.  I've admired him for quite some time now.  From his fashions to his roles in Project Runway and the Big C, Isaac's personalty definitely shines through all that he does.

Imagine my excitement when I received an invite from one of my best friends to accompany her to the 92Y for the Fashion Icons with Fern Mallis: Isaac Mizrahi discussion.  For those who may not know, Fern Mallis is the mastermind and creator of New York's Fashion Week.  She has teamed up with the 92Y to host a series of talks with today's most insightful, talented, creative, giving and iconic individuals of the fashion world.

The discussion took place in auditorium of the Y. It began with an introduction and description of the event from Fern Mallis then with a short film of Isaacs many accomplishments. Isaac took the stage not too long after. He was full of energy, excitement and smiles. Fern got right into the questions starting from the beginning. She really did her homework. Isaac, born in Brooklyn on October 14th, 1961 is the son of observant Jewish parents. One would assume that Isaac's love for fashion was destined to be as his father was a children's wear manufacturer and his mother one of the most fashionable women he knew.

At a young age Isaac would sketch in his Yeshiva of Flatbush prayer books and make puppets by hand.  His parents understood him and supported him in every way.
His father bought him a sewing machine and as a Bar Mitzvah gift gave him a large pair of scissors.
At times Isaac would accompany his father on business and one day his father encouraged him to choose some fabric which was later used to construct his first wearable garment, an outfit for his mother.  That was one of the first items he designed.

He went to the High School of Performing Arts where he studied acting, after graduating he was convinced to apply to Parsons where his classmates included Narcisso Rodriguez and Marc Jacobs. It was in his 2nd year at Parsons when it all clicked. He eventually landed a job at Perry Ellis and was later present with the Outstanding Student Designer award and offered a full time position at the company. He worked with them for about 1 to 2 years before leaving.

He released his first collection in 1987 (Isaac Mizrahi NY).  It was described as glamor with a twist. He received the Perry Ellis Emerging Talent award form the CFDA. The following year he received another CFDA award - Designer of the year. The recognition continued to roll in. In 1995, Mizrahi unleashed his fashion documentary Unzipped. Its a documentary that follows Isaac as he creates his 1994 fall line. This too received an CFDA award.  Isaac continues to create and dress women in wearable, stylish, chic, classy, affordable decadent pieces.  In the words of Isaac Mizrahi,"there is no fashion without foundation."

A reception took place afterwards where fans got a chance to meet the wonderful Mizrahi.
